The Power of Bouncing Back

Introduction

Bouncing back from adversity is my favourite topic when it comes to growth and self-development, because of the profound power and impact it can have on our lives.

Setbacks are disheartening and falling short can be discouraging, but nothing matters more than the recovery.

Dr Myles Munroe once said, we have every skill we’ll ever need to live at our full potential — God has installed within each of us, every tool necessary for our lives to be a success.

I didn’t fully grasp what he meant until I came up against certain obstacles.

Overcoming life’s problems is when I realised how powerful it is to recover from difficulty — especially when you do so beyond your own expectations.

Masterpiece in Progress

Picture your life as a sculpture in its original state — a mass pile of clay, not yet fully manufactured or designed to completion.

Once you’re born, the sculpture begins a slow formation across the span of your lifetime.

The manufacturer shapes each element of the design according to your life’s progression and growth, and as you grow, the formation of the sculpture continues.

Whenever challenges in life arise, a piece of your sculpture is damaged and breaks away.

If you allow misfortune to disrupt your mental and emotional state, cracks may begin to spread beyond the original point of damage.

These cracks worsen, gradually impeding the progress of your sculpture overall.

The longer you remain in a poor mental state, the more your sculpture becomes blemished.

However, let’s say you later decide to change your perspective.

At the onset of further life chaos, you purposefully refuse to let the situation at hand dictate your response as it once did

Instead, you choose to act, addressing the issue with the intention of resolving it as best you can.

The situation has then gone from bad, to effectively managed — and beneath it all, you’ve grown in resilience.

This area of your sculpture may have suffered initial damage, but your actions have created a fortified repair — stronger and renewed in its form.

So, in simpler terms, what am I trying to explain?

The Benefits of Resilience

My mother would always say, “Experience may be extremely unpleasant, but it is the greatest teacher.”

As children, we were all warned against touching a naked flame due to the risk of injury, but when you actually experience a burn, the lesson resonates more deeply.

Being burned isn’t pleasant, but we learn with absolute certainty to avoid a naked flame at all costs.

Bouncing back from difficulties carries the same level of impact in shaping the way our lives look moving forward.

In other words, acts of resilience create a ‘muscle memory’ in our mindset that elevates the quality of our responses to future challenges, strengthening our ability to handle life.

Surrendering to life’s pressures achieves the opposite — diminishing our sense of self and confidence.

We run the risk of sinking into distress, which can lead to mood disorders such as depression or anxiety, ultimately affecting our quality of life.

This is how neglecting difficulties can have long-term implications — the very areas of our sculpture that were once damaged and broken away.

Yielding to the troubles we face, can negatively influence our perspective, affect our self-worth, and compromise our mental toughness — the cracks in our sculpture formed from the initial damage.

Our self-esteem and self-confidence then become negatively affected — where the sculpture appeared mildly blemished.

Bouncing back from difficulties, fortifies our ability to recover from hardship and allows productive personal growth.

Each time we grow in this way, we become mentally strengthened — more equipped and capable.

This is why I described that area of the sculpture as fortified, rigorously robust, and renewed in its appearance. In essence, this is what happens.

We develop, become better and stronger, and in turn grow in self-confidence, becoming more assured of ourselves.

Practiced resilience encourages the unravelling of your true capabilities — qualities that already exist but must be discovered.

Summary

As I continued to grow on my own development journey, I began to experience imposter syndrome

The truth is, I wasn’t being an imposter — it was the unravelling of my true self and felt unfamiliar given how I had previously handled difficulty.

Through consistently learning to bounce back, I became more accustomed to this version of myself — the way God intended me to be.

He gave me the skills; I discovered them and learned how to use them to my benefit.

So, don’t be alarmed if you experience something similar as you start to approach life differently.

It may feel uncomfortable at first, but that’s how we grow as individuals. Ultimately, your life will begin to move in a more positive direction.

Life hurdles will always surface from time to time because that’s how life goes.

Having the ability to bounce back plays a major role in determining the quality of life we experience.

If you strike back at life disasters by pressing forward productively, you’ll build the kind of mental fortitude that separates those who thrive in life from those who don’t.

I’ll end here by asking you a question.

One day, when you reach your seniors years, how do you want your sculpture to look?

Maybe you’re already on the right track, or perhaps there’s room for improvement?

The idea is to cultivate a fulfilled life by constantly practicing a progressive way of living.

In doing so, we fashion and form our experiences, making full use of our potential — because life is meant to be lived, not tolerated.

So, no matter what comes your way, always decide to bounce back.
