Introduction
Fortunately for most of us, our lives aren’t in the spotlight, so our missteps often go unnoticed and free from scrutiny.
Even so, the world tends to be far less forgiving than God.
For those who haven’t been as fortunate, such as those caught in the system, life moving forward can present significant challenges, often shaped by the lasting stain of past mistakes.

For example, obtaining employment with a criminal record can be incredibly challenging, leaving many feeling like they cannot escape their past.
Each attempt can feel like a reminder of who they once were, despite their genuine efforts to build a new future.
This feeling some ex-convicts experience is something many of us impose on ourselves.
We carry a past we wish we could erase, yet find ourselves mentally imprisoned and developmentally stagnant.

Accountable or Captive?
Experiencing guilt isn’t always a bad thing.
It’s good to have a level of self-awareness, and feeling remorse, is a sign that you understand the difference between right and wrong — allowing you to take accountability.
A guilty conscience can become detrimental, however, when even after acknowledging your wrongdoing and making amends where possible, you continue to carry the shame.

Through the relationship I’ve developed with God, and the grace He has shown me, I came to understand something fundamental — once we’ve been cleared, we must let go and move on.
There’s nothing we can do about our past. What we can control however, is our perception and the decisions we make moving forward.

Seeing Things God's Way
I grew up surrounded by a church family, yet many of the choices I made in my young adult years went against everything I claimed to stand for.
I felt ashamed and disgusted with myself.
The world may call it karma, church folk may say it’s judgement — but in my mind, the sufferings I faced later in life felt like penance for the wrongs I had done.
Little did I know that God didn’t view it this way.

If you’ve ever read the parable of the prodigal son, the story of King David and Uriah, or the story of the woman caught in adultery, you’ll see that when we are truly repentant, God looks at the condition of our heart.
This is something often lost amongst humanity, as we tend to judge by actions.

In hindsight, I fell prey to temptations that offered short-term gratification at the time, but my heart was always in the right place.
Once I grew to understand the nature of God’s grace, I started to assess things differently.

We all know love to some extent, but God’s love is agape — a limitless love without boundaries.
Dr Myles Munroe once emphasised that nowhere in the Bible will you find a scripture explaining why God loves His children — He simply chooses to.
Sitting silently to ponder this brought tears to my eyes.
Realising that God chose to love me despite my indiscretions set me free from the prison of guilt in which I had kept myself captive.
In releasing my burdens to Him, I was finally able to break free from that mental confinement.

Reframing Our Shame
Who you were doesn’t need to be who you remain.
If you want a fresh start, you can begin at any moment you decide.
As a species, we’re fundamentally flawed — we can be selfish, depraved, greedy, spiteful, envious, distasteful, and the list goes on.
No matter how hard we try, we will make mistakes. What matters is that we take accountability, learn, and move on.

If your opinion about yourself is consistently unfavourable, it will erode your wellbeing, diminish your self-esteem, and limit your potential.
Don’t become hostage in your own body — whatever happened is behind you, so allow it to remain there.

Forgive yourself, release the guilt, and take consistent, intentional steps forward.
As I mentioned earlier, there are people who may never escape their past in the eyes of the world — and yet, even for them, God’s grace remains abundant if they choose to seek Him.

Many of us have been involved in things we would rather never speak about, and for which we may have grown to despise ourselves.
Perhaps you’re battling something you know is detrimental, but find it tough to break free.
Addictions aren’t limited to the ones we commonly recognise. Sometimes they can be subtle, yet the damage they cause is still significant.

We’ve all heard the saying, “God helps those who help themselves”.
Even if we call upon the Lord, He still expects us to play our part — through faith.
If you’re struggling, seek support. Go out of your way for yourself and by any means necessary — because you are always worth the investment.

Although we’ve all done things we’re not particularly proud of, the real question is how you want your past to look over the next few years.
Being able to look back and see meaningful accomplishments is something worth fighting for.

Summary
Forgive yourself, even if others don’t — because not everyone will.
If you’re a believer, seek God’s forgiveness too.
Take the learning from past mistakes and apply them moving forward to avoid future retakes.

As you begin to move with intention, you’re likely to be doubted — there will be people who only remember you for your past.
What matters most now, and moving forward, is how God sees you and how you see yourself.
Avoid the temptation to conform to the expectations of others.

We don’t exist to live for the approval of people. Rather, we’ve been created to please God and serve others — learn to become comfortable with what that truly implies.
Stay focused on improving and ignore the noise. You have every right to do life better.

Ctrl+Alt+Del the past and start afresh on a future that can rewrite the story of your life.
Don’t be the reason you’re held back — because in truth, the only person who can hold you back, is you.
Release the past and start anew.
